  • I love approaching clients as a coach, not as someone who tells you what to do, but as someone who will help you discover your strengths so that you can make your own choices.

You will enjoy working with me if you are seeking a calm, safe space to discuss the challenges that you are facing.  I approach each new person without judgment or expectations.

You will walk out of each session with me more hopeful and more motivated to overcome the challenges that you are facing.

  • One of my favorite phrases is “No one of us is as smart as all of us” (Ken Blanchard).  To me, that means we can do more together than alone.

In that spirit, I see you as the expert on your life and my role as helping you to identify the patterns, behaviors and relationships that have shaped your personality.  We will learn together as we talk, person-to-person, about the experiences in your life, what you’re challenged with in the moment and where there is disconnect between your values and your behaviours..

Each session will follow a simple format:

    • Review of what’s happened since the last session.

    • Identifying the issues that are most pressing to you at that moment.

    • Talking through your feelings and looking for meaning and patterns.

    • Agreeing on behaviour changes that you can try out between sessions.

    • Ending the session feeling motivated and hopeful of positive change.

There is no secret sauce here, you just need a willingness to do the work.  I am ready to help you.

  • I grew up in Western Canada in a house that valued hard work and restraint. As I reflect back on my upbringing, I realize that while I grew up in a privileged home, it was also one that was not comfortable with instability nor warm expressions of emotion. I was a successful high school and college athlete. My younger identity was shaped by the values modeled by my parents: achievement, restraint, and control.

In my early twenties, I married a Mexican-American woman and supported her and our young daughters while she obtained her degrees in women’s studies and political science. My wife opened my eyes to the discrimination and injustices of those experienced by others, whether on account of their race, gender, sexual orientation, or abilities.

Most of my working career has been in business leadership. What I enjoyed most about the various roles I held was the ability to coach - the ability to listen, understand others’ motivations, and inspire (rather than direct) change. Meeting business goals was less fulfilling to me than seeing others think differently about themselves and/or a problem.

My wife and I separated after 27 years when our daughters were grown and in college, and it was clear that being a constant source of stability for someone else had taken a toll on my own mental health. The process of going through the divorce was painful and helped me realize what a shell of a man I had become — lost somewhere in the shadow of my wife and falling short of who I think my father hoped I’d be.  I am grateful that I had many resources, including family support, medication, and therapy to endure and thrive during that time.

I became aware of so many other men who struggle with mental health and the unique barriers they can face in pursuing help.  This was the catalyst for changing careers into counseling.

  • I enjoy working with people of all genders, ethnicities, and orientations who feel like I would be someone who can help them with the challenges they are facing in life.  So if you are feeling anxious, depressed, scared, tired, or alone for any reason, I would love to meet you.  If there is a good fit, maybe I can help you.

I am particularly interested in working with:

    • People going through separation, divorce, or other relationship challenges.

    • Company founders who feel like they are fighting the battle alone.

    • First time people managers who feel like an imposter.

    • Athletes with anxiety about their performance.

    • Law enforcement, fire fighters, paramedics, and search and rescue team members who don’t have anyone to talk to about what they’ve experienced.

  • MA in Counselling Psychology (in progress)

    MSc. in Executive Leadership

    BA in Business

  • Therapeutic Coaching

  • I am based in Victoria, BC, Canada and work with clients locally and across North America.  This is a great place to live, with the mountains, forest, and the wild ocean right out my backdoor.

I have lived in or visited all 10 Canadian provinces and 37 of the 40 United States, including living and working in California for 18 years.  As a result, I have a pretty neutral voice, no apparent Canadian accent, eh!

I play golf when the weather is warm, practice yin yoga a few times each week, and have family dinner with my parents every Sunday.  I am a proud father of two adult children, who live in Vancouver and Toronto, and an uncle to a dog named Parker.

Finally, I volunteer locally with an innovative restorative justice program that connects offenders with their victims to fulfill their obligations to the victim and community in ways that can be more meaningful than through other criminal justice processes.
